Welcome to Your Jewish Community

Limmud Atlanta + SE is a unique Jewish community: a place where the agenda is set by volunteers for volunteers – by you. LimmudFest is a place where you are encouraged to be creative, take risks: try new things. Everyone teaches and everyone learns. Everyone is responsible for the experience this weekend. You make it happen. That’s why there are no participants or volunteers at LimmudFest: instead, everyone is a volunticipant

Seyder Tekhines: The Forgotten Book of Women's Common Prayer
Tekhines are a unique genre of heartfelt "prayers" or "supplications" written in Yiddish (usually by men) exclusively for women. Tekhines were first compiled in the 17th century for Ashkenazi women who typically could not read Hebrew. Books of tekhines were widely circulated across Europe and women eventually got involved in publishing -- becoming translators, editors, copyists and even typesetters. Today their distinctly female voice has led scholars and feminists to rediscover, reinterpret and reimagine tekhines. In this session we'll learn their history, read some tekines in English, and if time permits, write our own!

Moses the Giant Killer: A Guided Tour Through a Wild Midrash
As one of the enemies of Israel, the Torah records a man name Og king of Bashan. Deuteronomy refers to him as having been a giant. Who was Og and what was his story? The rabbis, seeing a great opportunity, greatly expand Og's story, describing him as an antediluvian behemoth, who held onto Noah's ark and was finally taken down by Moses himself in an epic battle. We will look at these stories and more and try to get behind the anecdotes to the Rabbis' message.

Forgive Me, Forgive Me Not I
MOVED... to Sunday, 1:45PM - 3:00PM in Mountainside Pavilion. Children will join at 2:30PM.

Forgiveness is a dynamic process that involves interplay of individuals whose intentions are as complicated as the spontaneous interaction between a moment in time and history. It is amazing how children, from a very young age, can learn how to give and receive forgiveness. They can learn from their mistakes and do teshuvah. They can become more caring members of the community, learn concrete ways to guide children to know themselves, learn from their mistakes and go through a complete teshuvah process without lectures, punishments, yelling, put-downs or arguments. We can create caring cultures with Positive Discipline and Jewish values.

Did The Exodus Happen??
If we’re going to do this seriously, we have to pay attention to our sources — the biblical texts — and to know as much as possible about who wrote which ones, when, and why. None of the earliest sources gives numbers of the people in the exodus. The famous huge numbers come only in the latest source. So the lack of archaeological evidence of a great mass of people leaving Egypt and living in the wilderness for a very long time proves nothing about the historicity of the event behind the earliest sources. The early sources picture a smaller event — and they point to who was there.

Think of yourself as Ayin and forget yourself totally.  Then you can transcend time, rising to the world of thought, where all is equal:  life and death, ocean and dry land," wrote Dov Baer. Death, Destruction, and Despair Await: The Dangers of the Mystical Encounter
With the popularization of kabbalah and meditation over the past two decades or so, the dangers inherent in mystical practice have widely been ignored. In this sessio,n we examine how Judaism traditionally has understood the dangers inherent in prying into secrets and then move to three events where mystical engagement led to destruction. These are: The story of the four sages who entered Pardes; Joseph Della Reina's (1418–1472) failure with his students to capture the king of demons in order to bring the Messiah; and the early death of Isaac Luria attributed in some traditions to his revealing secrets that should have remained hidden.

Dissident Bodies: Reimagining Disability in Talmud & Jewish Theology
What makes a body fit for holy service? While the book of Leviticus forbids priests with “blemishes” from serving at the altar, the Talmudic discussion of this prohibition challenges straightforward notions of disability and opens up provocative possibilities for disabled priests. This session couples the study of traditional texts from Bible, Mishnah, and Talmud with contemporary spiritual writing on disability to reimagine the power and potential of dissident bodies in Jewish thought and practice.

Watch Your Mouth! Lessons from the Chofetz Chaim
"Sticks and stones may break bones but words can never harm me!" We've repeated this phrase many a time; however the truth may really be quite far from this. We all know how powerful words can be and how their sting can last far longer than any bruise from the proverbial stick or stone. Jewish law has much to say about how we can be more careful with what and how we speak so as not to inflict harm on others and do irreparable damage. We will be studying from the writings of Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan, otherwise known as The Chofetz Chaim.

Holocaust: The Word We Love To Hate
How did a Greek – rather than a Hebrew or Yiddish -- word become the name for the Final Solution, particularly a word which depicts Jews as sacrifices? We’ll trace the evolution of this term and examine some of the issues which have been at the heart of the discussion about the Holocaust since 1945: Was it an unprecedented phenomenon or simply an act of anti-Semitism? Was it unique or similar to other genocides? Who are its victims: Jews? Soviet POWs? Polish dissidents? German homosexuals? What do these questions tell us about the society and communities which are debating them?

You Are Cordially Uninvited: The Case for Elimination of Bar/Bat Mitzvah Ceremonies
At first consideration, it seems nearly impossible and unimaginable to consider eliminating the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony as a significant milestone event in the Jewish lifecycle. However, with some exploration of the history of the ceremony, an examination of the current crisis in post-B’nei Mitzvah drop-out, and consideration of how Jewish education could be drastically better without it, you too will understand why eliminating this ritual as we know it might be good for the Jewish people.

Chavruta I
Come explore Jewish attitudes to issues of wealth and finance, prosperity, work, consumerism and Tzedakah.  What is ultimately valuable?  Is work a blessing or a curse?  Is it unethical to spend lavishly?  What is the relationship between charity and justice?  (Sources compiled by volunteers from Limmud Galil, Limmud UK, Limmud NY and Limmud Hungary, and edited by Robin Cooke and Robin Moss.) This is the first of three chavruta sessions.

Chavruta is a traditional rabbinic approach to Talmudic study in which a pair of students analyze, discuss, and debate a shared text. It is a primary learning method in yeshivas and kollels, where students often engage regular study partners of similar knowledge and ability, and is also practiced by people outside the yeshiva setting, in work, home and vacation settings.

Unlike a teacher-student relationship, in which the student memorizes and repeats the material back in tests, chavruta-style learning puts each student in the position of analyzing the text, organizing thoughts into logical arguments, explaining reasoning to the partner, hearing out the partner's reasoning, and questioning and sharpening each other's ideas, often arriving at entirely new insights into the meaning of the text.

Children in films for adult audiences are not that common; ultra-Orthodox children are even more of a rarity. During this session, My Father My Lord (David Volach, 2007) will be screened and discussed in depth. Possible points for discussion may include: How is the fact that the writer and director is a former Haredi Jew visible in the film through its style and legible through its themes? What cinematic techniques are employed to approximate the experience of a child? How does this film differ from other films made by Israelis that depict the ultra-Orthodox lifestyle? How is this film, through its theme and even its structure, a parable?

Israel's Nature and Environmental Campaigns 101: Grassroots Environmental Victories Go National, Thanks To Kids' Activism at Home
Updated: Session Canceled

Presentation, including film clips, will review Israel’s natural treasures, the status of recent environmental issues and projects from Israel’s northern to southern borders. As a developing nation (Israel signed the Kyoto Accord with ‘developing nation’ status), Israel has not yet approached western progressive standards. On the upside, creative approaches to environmental national campaigns have proven highly effective in Israel - models that could be recreated locally. LESSENING THE FOOTPRINT IN THE HOME has been most smoothly accomplished through environmental education programs targeting children - green roofs, community gardens, water conservation and more have spread like wildfire throughout the nation, as a result.

The Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities (GCDD) has created an initiative based on the ideas of person centered and community centered approaches. Working in communities throughout Georgia and in other states, this initiative has evolved over the last four years but remains true to the idea of bringing local people together to act collectively for change that improves the lives of all people, including those with developmental disabilities. This session will provide an overview of what it means to build community and how in these efforts we can make sure that all community members are involved, including those who have been marginalized.

#JAN25, #J14, #OWS: A Conversation About Social Networks, Social Protests, Social Change, and Social Values
Two years ago, the world changed. Social networks helped longtime social change activists and new never-before activists from nearly every corner in the world organize, communicate and collaborate like never before. Millions of Egyptians overthrew a dictator who controlled their country and lives for decades. Half a million Israelis took to the streets one Motzei Shabbat demanding "social justice" and making connections many of them did not make before. In this country, thousands occupied Wall Street for days, demanding justice for the 99%. What were all these claims about? Why did they happen when they did? What resulted from these still ongoing movements? What are the connections between them, and what can we learn from them? Where do our social values as Jews fit into each one of these movements, and the global call for change still echoing from the streets of Cairo, Tel-Aviv, New-York and nearly every major city on our globe? Join us for a conversation, and share your thoughts on all of these questions and more!

Sacred Scandals: Bad Behavior in Biblical Texts
You think the Bible and other historical stories are all about good people and good choices? Did you know that it’s filled with scandal – perhaps even evil urges? Eve disobeys orders. Cain kills his brother. Jacob tricks his father and cheats his brother. And the scandal doesn’t end there. The TaNaKh is filled with sexual misconduct, lies and other bad behavior. We will try to answer these questions "What do these stories tell us?" and "What are we supposed to learn from them?"

AJFF Presents: Y-Love Movie
Y-Love is the "premier Orthodox Jewish entity in hip hop." Raised in inner-city Baltimore, Yitz Jordan became fascinated with Judaism as a child, attended Yeshiva in his teens and endured a short-lived arranged marriage to a Yiddish speaking woman who didn't think he was religious enough. Music is the medium through which Y-Love connects to his faith; he seems most at ease spouting rhymes on a Jerusalem stage, surrounded by adoring, religious fans. This documentary paints a poignant portrait of a perennial outsider: a Black, Jewish, gay orphan searching for a home.

This 50 minute movie will be followed by a presentation and discussion with Y-Love.

Forgive Me, Forgive Me Not I
Forgiveness is a dynamic process that involves interplay of individuals whose intentions are as complicated as the spontaneous interaction between a moment in time and history. It is amazing how children, from a very young age, can learn how to give and receive forgiveness. They can learn from their mistakes and do teshuvah. They can become more caring members of the community. Learn concrete ways to guide children to know themselves, learn from their mistakes and go through a complete teshuvah process without lectures, punishments, yelling, put-downs or arguments. We can create caring cultures with Positive Discipline and Jewish values.

This first session will be text study to explore the complexities of teshuvah and its effect on our personal growth. We discuss the question: are mistakes really an opportunity to learn? Adults are invited to observe and/or participate in an engaging session with children.

This session was made possible by a grant from The Covenant Foundation.

How Shmita Could Change the World: Rest and Release in the Seven Year Cycle
Shmita is the biblically mandated “sabbatical year’ of rest and release when agriculture and commerce were simultaneously re-adjusted to enable a more equitable, just, and healthy society, economy, and environment. In order to succeed, it would seem that the  shmita paradigm would influence all economic, agricultural, and communal activity, not just in the seventh year, but also in the six years leading up to it.  What values are inherent in this most ancient and radical of mitzvot? What might it mean for Jewish life across the globe? The next shmita year begins Rosh Hashana 2014 – let’s talk about it!

No Art After Auschwitz? Film Screening: Night and Fog as Alain Resnais’s Cinematic Response
Although a mis-quotation of Theodor Adorno, this question is worth bearing in mind during this session’s screening and discussion of Night and Fog (Alain Resnais, 1955). Is ethical filmmaking possible when dealing with the Holocaust as subject matter? How might the answers to this question change when different modes of narrative, documentary, and experimental filmmaking are employed? How specifically does Alain Resnais mediate this problem? More broadly, are certain stylistic techniques more or less appropriate and/or effective in approaching the Holocaust?

How exactly would a society ever actually practice shmita? Wouldn't everyone go hungry and complete upheaval and pandemonium take place?

Following up on the first Shmita course, these courses will explore the implications for how life would be different in the other six years - What skills would we need? What structures would have to change? Which values would guide our thinking?

Israeli TV in America: An Unlikely Cinderella Story
Sharing the research from a book manuscript in progress this lecture will center on the recent popularity of Israeli television formats or programming concepts in the U.S. Grounding the analysis in historical and contemporary contexts the session will explore the way Israeli television, founded in the late 1960 as a single-channel Statist (Mamlakhti) public service transformed in the last two decades into a robust, commercial industry, with emerging international capacities in a new, more globalized media landscape. Focusing more specifically on the biggest Israeli hit in the U.S. to date, Showtime's "Homeland," and on the original Israeli series it has been adapted from "Hatufim" (Prisoners of War), the session will contemplate the new level of Israeli-U.S. cultural exchange marked by such adaptations.

Profits and Prophets: What the Bible Teaches Us about Entrepreneurship
Jewish educator and serial entrepreneur Patrick Aleph argues that the prophets of the Bible may have more in common with today's CEOs than pulpit rabbis. Drawing from his personal research on social entrepreneurs and Biblical criticism, Aleph contends that what we used to call "prophecy" is really a combination of five factors, which coincidentally lead to amazing, "social benefit" companies like Tom's Shoes or Charity Water.

Bible, History and Faith: A Conversation
In modern times, some feel that Judaism/religion has been undermined by academic studies. Much of the biblical account is understood by many as folklore or myth, and even more conservative scholars admit to serious reworking of history. The authorship of the Torah is now understood to have come from multiple hands and to have been put together over centuries. Where does that leave Jewish faith and Jewish practice? Is there a way of rethinking or reimagining Jewish faith in Torah and our connection to the core narrative of Israelite history? Hear — and then join — a conversation between Richard Elliott Friedman and Zev Farber as we discuss options and ways of navigating this tension. Questions, comments and alternative suggestions will be more than welcome.

Mechina: A Preparation Documentary Film: Six Israeli Teens Before The Army
Mechina: A Preparation" is a 45-minute documentary film that explores the lives of six Israeli teens before they enter mandatory military service. Told from the perspective of Maital Guttman, who was born in Israel but moved to the US at the age of 7, "Mechina: A Preparation" does not point fingers but rather shows the personal, human side of young Israelis. The film has toured Jewish film festivals, college campuses, and high schools around the country and has inspired productive dialogue amongst thousands of young people.

10Q: Reflect. React. Renew: Life's Biggest Questions. Answered By You.
10Q is a reinvention of the ancient ritual of reflection during the ten days surrounding the Jewish New Year. 10Q sends participants one question a day online over the 10 days between the holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. At the end of the 10 days, participants’ answers to questions, about life, future goals, relationships, ways they hope to impact the world around them, and more, are sent into a digital vault. The next year, just before Rosh Hashanah, answers are sent back to participants and the process begins again. Over time, people can build up an archive of their beliefs, values and experiences. Throughout the LimmudFest weekend, we will engage in preparation to get you ready to start your on-line 10Q on September 4th.

Interest Free Loans as a Jewish Imperative: Halachic Basis, Practice and History of Interest Free Loans
Jewish interest-free loan funds have an Atlanta history essentially as long as Jews have been in Atlanta.

Jewish immigrants to Atlanta in the late 19th and early 20th centuries made their livelihoods largely as merchants and through small-business enterprises. For these Jewish new immigrants, access to capital from banks was virtually non-existent and bankers were unwilling to make loans to recently arrived immigrants who generally lacked collateral, in part due to anti-Semitism.  As a result, Jewish free loan societies were created.

The history of Jewish free loan associations in Atlanta and generally in Jewish history will be briefly explored and the Torah and Talmudic basis and practice of such institutions will be discussed.  The value of such institutions as an integral part of the social and economic safety net of a Jewish community will be presented along with an introduction to the major Jewish free loans now operating in our region.

Sunmoon Pie is the duo of singer-songwriters Bonnie Puckett on piano & Michael Levine on guitar.  They are an Atlanta-based Jewish music group, writing a blend of spiritual yet often quirky songs that explore the human condition through the lens of Jewish & Kabbalistic themes.  They also serve as music leaders of the alternative Shabbat services at Ahavath Achim (AA) Synagogue in Atlanta and travel throughout the U.S. to perform as well.  Michael has opened for such acts as Dave Matthews Band, Counting Crows & Joe Walsh as a singer-songwriter, and Bonnie is a member and former musical director of the female a cappella group Octave.

Sunmoon Pie will be leading alternative prayers, chants & meditations throughout the Limmud weekend, and in this concert you can see their more folk-rock side as they sing original songs & even popular cover songs.

The Psychology of the Jews: Are Jews Different Psychologically From Other Religious Groups?
Mel Konner has written a book entitled, The Anthropology of the Jews in which he makes a case for the Jews as a people having a culture that differentiates them from almost all other groups. Is the same true for the mind frame, the personality or the identity of the Jewish people? Is there a psychology of the Jews? We'll examine this topic from a scholarly perspective and then argue about it. Ultimately, however, we will find no conclusion we can all agree on and, in the process, we will lose all respect for the person presenting the topic. Following the session, we will feel that we have chosen the wrong session and that we should have attended the one on Yiddish niggunim.
Discuss.

The Feminine Mystique and the Mikvah: Outlooks and Insights into the Mitzvah of Taharat HaMishpacha
There is a very beautiful and meaningful mitzvah that Jewish couples have been observing for thousands of years. From the times of Abraham and Sarah to the years on Masada. From the shtetls of Europe to the communities of Morocco. From Borough Park, New York to the suburbs of Birmingham, Alabama.  Jewish women have been going to a mikvah as a part of their married lives for millennia, however this area of Jewish life has been largely misunderstood, misconstrued and considered irrelevant by many.  Let’s take a fresh look at these ancient wisdoms and discover together how they can apply to us and our lives today.

All Souls Bless: Nishmat Kol Hai and the Poetry of Praise
One of the most beautiful poems in the traditional prayer service, Nishmat Kol Hai calls the souls of all creatures to praise and bless the divine. Beginning with contemplative Hebrew and English chant, we move slowly through the evocative phrases of the prayer. After we read contemporary poetry on related themes, workshop participants have the opportunity to craft their own responses and share snippets of their writing with the group.

The Modern Day Golem: Robots In Jewish Law
What exactly makes one human according to Jewish law? The legend of the Golem, the anthropomorphic being created entirely from inanimate matter, forced Jewish thinkers and devisors throughout the ages to grapple with the line that separates man from machine. Far from being only a theoretical question, this issue has many practical ramifications for our own lives. In this class, we will explore the conceptual and constructive concerns surrounding Man playing God.

Tai Chi for Enlightenment Part II
Think of yourself as Ayin and forget yourself totally.  Then you can transcend time, rising to the world of thought, where all is equal:  life and death, ocean and dry land," wrote Dov Baer.  Mystics of all traditions describe a similar state of divine union, and many methods have been developed for cultivating this state.  The method practiced in this workshop is a centuries-old movement meditation from the Wudang Mountains in central China.

Forgive Me, Forgive Me Not II
Forgiveness is a dynamic process that involves interplay of individuals whose intentions are as complicated as the spontaneous interaction between a moment in time and history. It is amazing how children, from a very young age, can learn how to give and receive forgiveness. They can learn from their mistakes and do teshuvah. They can become more caring members of the community, learn concrete ways to guide children to know themselves, learn from their mistakes and go through a complete teshuvah process without lectures, punishments, yelling, put-downs or arguments.  We can create caring cultures with Positive Discipline and Jewish values.

This is the second session of two. In this session we will discuss how can we help our children/students incorporate teshuvah in their everyday lives. Educators and parents will learn about a process that helps children understand their roles and responsibility in conflicts that occur at home, school, camp and in the community.

This session was made possible by a grant from The Covenant Foundation.

How A Jew Says I'm Sorry: An Examination Of The Laws Of Repentance
Though often decried by critics as an unforgiving religion, Judaism, in fact, has a well-developed and psychologically sensitive concept of teshuvah, repentance. Our tradition recognizes that it is both hard to ask for forgiveness and equally hard to grant it. Judaism considers repentance to be one of the building blocks of the world and a necessity for a harmonious community. In this session we shall do a close read of Rambam, [Maimonides] Hilochot Teshuvah [Laws of Repentance] and learn why Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and the Ten Days of Repentance are considered joyous opportunities for starting afresh.

What Would Moses Pay? Employment Compensation and Jewish Values
What is appropriate compensation for your work? While transit workers in San Francisco are striking to maintain a compensation package that includes low-cost health insurance and employer-paid defined benefit retirement plans, similarly situated employees at retail outlets receive an hourly wage with no benefits. What would our sages teach us about how we should think about worker compensation? We'll take a look a few Talmudic sources regarding worker compensation and then have a lively discussion (and hopefully a debate!).
