Limmud Atlanta + SE is a unique Jewish community: a place where the agenda is set by volunteers for volunteers – by you. LimmudFest is a place where you are encouraged to be creative, take risks: try new things. Everyone teaches and everyone learns. Everyone is responsible for the experience this weekend. You make it happen. That’s why there are no participants or volunteers at LimmudFest: instead, everyone is a volunticipant.

Parents! Get your kids in their PJs and bring them to Lakeside Family Cabin 27/28 (in the middle living area) for some bedtime stories supplied by PJ Library. We will have volunteers on hand to read, but we encourage you to jump in and participate as well. This is a great introduction to Camp Limmud and a wonderful start to the weekend. Seyder Tekhines: The Forgotten Book of Women's Common Prayer

Tekhines are a unique genre of heartfelt "prayers" or "supplications" written in Yiddish (usually by men) exclusively for women. Tekhines were first compiled in the 17th century for Ashkenazi women who typically could not read Hebrew. Books of tekhines were widely circulated across Europe and women eventually got involved in publishing -- becoming translators, editors, copyists and even typesetters. Today their distinctly female voice has led scholars and feminists to rediscover, reinterpret and reimagine tekhines. In this session we'll learn their history, read some tekines in English, and if time permits, write our own!

As one of the enemies of Israel, the Torah records a man name Og king of Bashan. Deuteronomy refers to him as having been a giant. Who was Og and what was his story? Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls: Wait a Minute - WHY NOT?!

Start your day with a tiyul tefila, prayer hike, that will include a visit to one of the many fabulous waterfalls at Ramah Darom. Our tefila will follow the broad outline of the morning Shacharit service, with some time at the end for hitdbodedut – the Hasidic practice of personal prayer in nature. Wear comfortable shoes. A water bottle and shoes you don’t mind getting wet are also a good idea, as there will be an opportunity to dip your feet in the water. This session will take place rain or shine.

Saturday morning prayers are adapted to Hebrew mantras. Through repetition and singing, one can enter meditative states of devotion and connection to the Divine. Did The Exodus Happen??

If we’re going to do this seriously, we have to pay attention to our sources — the biblical texts — and to know as much as possible about who wrote which ones, when, and why. None of the earliest sources gives numbers of the people in the exodus. The famous huge numbers come only in the latest source. So the lack of archaeological evidence of a great mass of people leaving Egypt and living in the wilderness for a very long time proves nothing about the historicity of the event behind the earliest sources. The early sources picture a smaller event — and they point to who was there.

Death, Destruction, and Despair Await: The Dangers of the Mystical Encounter

With the popularization of kabbalah and meditation over the past two decades or so, the dangers inherent in mystical practice have widely been ignored. In this sessio,n we examine how Judaism traditionally has understood the dangers inherent in prying into secrets and then move to three events where mystical engagement led to destruction. These are: The story of the four sages who entered Pardes; Joseph Della Reina's (1418–1472) failure with his students to capture the king of demons in order to bring the Messiah; and the early death of Isaac Luria attributed in some traditions to his revealing secrets that should have remained hidden.

Come explore Jewish attitudes to issues of wealth and finance, prosperity, work, consumerism and Tzedakah. What is ultimately valuable? Is work a blessing or a curse? Is it unethical to spend lavishly? What is the relationship between charity and justice? (Sources compiled by volunteers from Limmud Galil, Limmud UK, Limmud NY and Limmud Hungary, and edited by Robin Cooke and Robin Moss.) This is the first of three chavruta sessions.

Chavruta is a traditional rabbinic approach to Talmudic study in which a pair of students analyze, discuss, and debate a shared text. It is a primary learning method in yeshivas and kollels, where students often engage regular study partners of similar knowledge and ability, and is also practiced by people outside the yeshiva setting, in work, home and vacation settings.

Unlike a teacher-student relationship, in which the student memorizes and repeats the material back in tests, chavruta-style learning puts each student in the position of analyzing the text, organizing thoughts into logical arguments, explaining reasoning to the partner, hearing out the partner's reasoning, and questioning and sharpening each other's ideas, often arriving at entirely new insights into the meaning of the text.

Children in films for adult audiences are not that common; ultra-Orthodox children are even more of a rarity. During this session, My Father My Lord (David Volach, 2007) will be screened and discussed in depth. As a developing nation (Israel signed the Kyoto Accord with ‘developing nation’ status), Israel has not yet approached western progressive standards. On the upside, creative approaches to environmental national campaigns have proven highly effective in Israel - models that could be recreated locally. AJFF Presents: Y-Love Movie

Y-Love is the "premier Orthodox Jewish entity in hip hop." Raised in inner-city Baltimore, Yitz Jordan became fascinated with Judaism as a child, attended Yeshiva in his teens and endured a short-lived arranged marriage to a Yiddish speaking woman who didn't think he was religious enough. Music is the medium through which Y-Love connects to his faith; he seems most at ease spouting rhymes on a Jerusalem stage, surrounded by adoring, religious fans. This documentary paints a poignant portrait of a perennial outsider: a Black, Jewish, gay orphan searching for a home.

This 50 minute movie will be followed by a presentation and discussion with Y-Love.

Forgiveness is a dynamic process that involves interplay of individuals whose intentions are as complicated as the spontaneous interaction between a moment in time and history. It is amazing how children, from a very young age, can learn how to give and receive forgiveness. They can learn from their mistakes and do teshuvah. They can become more caring members of the community. Learn concrete ways to guide children to know themselves, learn from their mistakes and go through a complete teshuvah process without lectures, punishments, yelling, put-downs or arguments. We can create caring cultures with Positive Discipline and Jewish values.

This first session will be text study to explore the complexities of teshuvah and its effect on our personal growth. We discuss the question: are mistakes really an opportunity to learn? Adults are invited to observe and/or participate in an engaging session with children.

Give instructions to create a snack or dish for the judges using the ingredients provided. The challenge is No Heat, No Problem. Campers will create their dish without cooking or using heat. They must use the secret ingredients: apples and honey. Give a time limit and have them present to judges at the end. Judge based on taste, creativity, and plating. Although a mis-quotation of Theodor Adorno, this question is worth bearing in mind during this session’s screening and discussion of Night and Fog (Alain Resnais, 1955). Is ethical filmmaking possible when dealing with the Holocaust as subject matter? How might the answers to this question change when different modes of narrative, documentary, and experimental filmmaking are employed? How specifically does Alain Resnais mediate this problem? Israeli TV in America: An Unlikely Cinderella Story

Sharing the research from a book manuscript in progress this lecture will center on the recent popularity of Israeli television formats or programming concepts in the U.S. Grounding the analysis in historical and contemporary contexts the session will explore the way Israeli television, founded in the late 1960 as a single-channel Statist (Mamlakhti) public service transformed in the last two decades into a robust, commercial industry, with emerging international capacities in a new, more globalized media landscape. Focusing more specifically on the biggest Israeli hit in the U.S. to date, Showtime's "Homeland," and on the original Israeli series it has been adapted from "Hatufim" (Prisoners of War), the session will contemplate the new level of Israeli-U.S. cultural exchange marked by such adaptations.

Jewish educator and serial entrepreneur Patrick Aleph argues that the prophets of the Bible may have more in common with today's CEOs than pulpit rabbis. Interest Free Loans as a Jewish Imperative: Halachic Basis, Practice and History of Interest Free Loans

Jewish interest-free loan funds have an Atlanta history essentially as long as Jews have been in Atlanta.

Jewish immigrants to Atlanta in the late 19th and early 20th centuries made their livelihoods largely as merchants and through small-business enterprises. For these Jewish new immigrants, access to capital from banks was virtually non-existent and bankers were unwilling to make loans to recently arrived immigrants who generally lacked collateral, in part due to anti-Semitism. As a result, Jewish free loan societies were created.

The history of Jewish free loan associations in Atlanta and generally in Jewish history will be briefly explored and the Torah and Talmudic basis and practice of such institutions will be discussed. The value of such institutions as an integral part of the social and economic safety net of a Jewish community will be presented along with an introduction to the major Jewish free loans now operating in our region.

Join the entire LimmudFest community for our weekend gala. We will share some of the highlights of the weekend together and then enjoy the music of Sunmoon Pie.

Sunmoon Pie is the duo of singer-songwriters Bonnie Puckett on piano & Michael Levine on guitar. They are an Atlanta-based Jewish music group, writing a blend of spiritual yet often quirky songs that explore the human condition through the lens of Jewish & Kabbalistic themes. They also serve as music leaders of the alternative Shabbat services at Ahavath Achim (AA) Synagogue in Atlanta and travel throughout the U.S. to perform as well. Michael has opened for such acts as Dave Matthews Band, Counting Crows & Joe Walsh as a singer-songwriter, and Bonnie is a member and former musical director of the female a cappella group Octave.

Sunmoon Pie will be leading alternative prayers, chants & meditations throughout the Limmud weekend, and in this concert you can see their more folk-rock side as they sing original songs & even popular cover songs.

The Psychology of the Jews: Are Jews Different Psychologically From Other Religious Groups?

Mel Konner has written a book entitled, The Anthropology of the Jews in which he makes a case for the Jews as a people having a culture that differentiates them from almost all other groups. Is the same true for the mind frame, the personality or the identity of the Jewish people? Is there a psychology of the Jews? We'll examine this topic from a scholarly perspective and then argue about it. Ultimately, however, we will find no conclusion we can all agree on and, in the process, we will lose all respect for the person presenting the topic. Following the session, we will feel that we have chosen the wrong session and that we should have attended the one on Yiddish niggunim.

Forgiveness is a dynamic process that involves interplay of individuals whose intentions are as complicated as the spontaneous interaction between a moment in time and history. It is amazing how children, from a very young age, can learn how to give and receive forgiveness. They can learn from their mistakes and do teshuvah. They can become more caring members of the community, learn concrete ways to guide children to know themselves, learn from their mistakes and go through a complete teshuvah process without lectures, punishments, yelling, put-downs or arguments. We can create caring cultures with Positive Discipline and Jewish values.

This is the second session of two. In this session we will discuss how can we help our children/students incorporate teshuvah in their everyday lives. Educators and parents will learn about a process that helps children understand their roles and responsibility in conflicts that occur at home, school, camp and in the community.

How A Jew Says I'm Sorry: An Examination Of The Laws Of Repentance

Though often decried by critics as an unforgiving religion, Judaism, in fact, has a well-developed and psychologically sensitive concept of teshuvah, repentance. Our tradition recognizes that it is both hard to ask for forgiveness and equally hard to grant it. Judaism considers repentance to be one of the building blocks of the world and a necessity for a harmonious community. In this session we shall do a close read of Rambam, [Maimonides] Hilochot Teshuvah [Laws of Repentance] and learn why Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and the Ten Days of Repentance are considered joyous opportunities for starting afresh.

What Would Moses Pay? Employment Compensation and Jewish Values

What is appropriate compensation for your work? While transit workers in San Francisco are striking to maintain a compensation package that includes low-cost health insurance and employer-paid defined benefit retirement plans, similarly situated employees at retail outlets receive an hourly wage with no benefits. What would our sages teach us about how we should think about worker compensation? We'll take a look a few Talmudic sources regarding worker compensation and then have a lively discussion (and hopefully a debate!).
